Inland Championships 2007 at Rutland Water

RTYC Cadets enjoyed mixed results at the Inland Championships, held at Rutland Water in the East Midlands just after Easter.
With a high pressure system centred on the UK, the two day event was plagued by very light breezes, which made the racing very difficult and unpredictable.
In the Regatta fleet for novice crews, George and William Payne in ‘Unique’ started their first ever championship with an excellent 3rd place in the first race, and followed this up with a consistent series of results in the five race series to finish in 5th place overall. A podium position looked on the cards until George and Wills were victims of the fickle breeze in the final race, when fell from 2nd to 14th, which pulled them down the overall rankings. However, it is clear that ‘Unique’ will be a threat to their more experienced competitors in the future!
In the main Fleet, the light winds meant there was no racing on day 1, so the pressure was on everyone as all three races on day 2 counted for the final result.
On a very tricky day for racing, Erin Clark and Lily Woollard in ‘Challenger’ emerged as the highest placed RTYC competitor. Erin and Lily made the most of the light breezes, and put together a consistent set of results to achieve their best ever overall position in a national event.
They were closely followed by Edward Jaffa and Jemima Crossland in ‘Crème de la Crème’ and Jamie Oaten and Ben Binmore in ‘Harum Scarum’. Both teams showed real potential at times, with both Crème and Harum challenging at the top of the fleet at times. But both crews suffered in the light conditions, and were unable to put together a consistent series.
Similarly, James and Charlie Payne in ‘Buoy Racer’ and Myelie and Chloe Binmore in ‘Awesome’ were unable to find their form, and were disappointed to finish below their expected positions.
So, mixed results for our Cadets at the first national regatta of the year. Overall, however, they left Rutland feeling optimistic about the future, with everyone knowing that they have the ability to acquit themselves well in a highly competitive fleet.
And with the next national event being held in just 2 weeks’ time at Portland Harbour, everyone is raring to go!
