Royal Tobay Yacht Club
Cadet Class Squadron 13

Welcome to the RTYC Cadet page.
Come on in, and join the fun!

The International Cadet has been the most popular dinghy for junior sailors in Torquay, ever since the first one was built back in 1947. And at the start of the 21st Century, we still believe that the Cadet remains the best dinghy for juniors to learn to sail, and for older youths to cut their teeth on the race course.

Club racing is held on Saturday afternoons throughout the year, and on Wednesday evenings in the Spring and Summer.

We also have some club boats, which enables us to introduce newcomers to the joys of Cadet sailing. We normally have fun sessions on Friday evenings in the Spring and Summer, when anyone is welcome to have a go.

Over the years, the RTYC Cadet fleet has produced many national and international level sailors, many of whom have gone on to enjoy success in adult boats. But whilst we pride ourselves on competitive success, we never forget how important it is to have a good time both on and off the water, especially as we are privileged to be able to sail in magnificent Torbay – which is surely the best area of the water in the whole country!

We are keen to welcome children (and their parents!) who are interested in joining us – and it doesn’t matter too much whether they have completed some basic training already, or are complete beginners. If you are enthusiastic, you are half way there!.

We know from experience that boys and girls are best suited to start Cadetting when they are about 9 or 10, though we have some members who started when they were as young as 7. However, Cadets are designed for youths up to the age of 17, so don’t think you have missed the boat if you are a older (sorry about the pun!).

Obviously, all the sailors need to be able to swim. We take safety very seriously, and no-one is allowed on the water unless they are properly equipped, and definitely not until the safety boat is on patrol and ready to meet them

RTYC Cadets have lots of fun, are valued members of the club, and enjoy their sailing.

And for the adults, once you have become a Cadet parent, your lives will be changed forever!
